May 2013 - 20th Anniversary Walk: Arundel to Amberley.

Twenty years ago Ken Lane, Mick Moses, John Hayes and David Napper -  following retirement - thought it a good idea to keep in touch by meeting up for a walk and lunch once a month. Who would have thought that their ' light bulb ' moment would have sparked such interest among other ' retiring ' colleagues which has grown into the large group of 39 members we have today.

So it was that 14 Dimmers arrived in improving weather in Arundel for the start of today's auspicious walk. The route, slightly shortened from the original 20 years ago (or was it ?) took us up and over ( you did warn us Ron !!! ) and over and down traversing the magnificent area of Arundel Park. The morning walk was 4.3 miles although Ted managed to do a bit more. The rest of us took the 'shorter route' via the hole in the wall. This hilarious exercise was likened to The Great Escape !!  The afternoon walk which was uneventful apart from the mud and a further slithery climb was 3.3.miles.

Our dinning venue was The Bridge Inn at Amberley where we were joined by our esteemed leader David and 4 other Dimmers, swelling our total to 19. Lunch was as always a lively affair and we all enjoyed our meals.

There was much reminiscing of those golden halcyon days including fond remembrances of those who are sadly no longer with us or, of those now unable to walk through infirmity. All of those members have been remembered today.

Thank you Ron for leading today's celebratory walk and a big THANK YOU to ' those first four ' whose idea gave rise to the large group of friends we have today.

Stride out and feel the wind on your face
Free from care in a woodland place
Up on a hill or over a stream
Time to think and time to dream
Walk on a track or on a footpath
Reminisce or chat, have a chuckle and a laugh
Look at nature all around
Up in the air or on the ground
The air is fresh and the sun is bright
The views are amazing at any height

April 2015 - Chuck Hatch & Pooh Bridge, Hartfield.

Our Pooh Bridge walk today proved to be an 'extra special happy occasion' when Arthur and Sheila announced they were ENGAGED !!!

So - a memorable walk (for all sorts of reasons) in glorious sunshine ably led by Peter and Glynis. Thank you to you both. The well-prepared group participated in very competitive bout of Pooh Sticks - organised into heats and a final.

By an entirely un-contrived means ( I think) - the two finalists turned out to be Sheila and Arthur themselves!

On behalf of EVERYONE in the group we send you our love and sincere CONGRATULATIONS !
We look forward to seeing you both in June when the walk will be led by none other than the very new MR & MRS WARNER. Yes, it's a short engagement !!!
So come along and join in the celebrations on Thursday 25th June. For the rest of us, we also convene on Thursday 28th May.

February 2016 - Along the River Adur

A special photo of us enjoying the sunshine along the River Adur.

See how many Dimmers you can recognize! Unfortunately, there are no prizes. (Clue: One of the missing ones was our very own "head-banger"!)

A lovely walk by Dave and Jan of 9½ flat miles. Once again we were so lucky with the weather, which also gave us the very atmospheric view below.

October 2016

As you can see a few of us were photographed on Jackie and John's walk today, up to our usual tricks, over the hills and far away. Well, from the Sussex Ox, there and back and there and back again !

16 Dimmers arrived for the morning walk up the hill, the great and the good put their best foot forward and climbed out of the mist and up and up to Windover Hill. At the top, the walkers were rewarded with a wonderful 360deg view. Descending back down into Milton Street, 9 other Dimmers were waiting at the Sussex Ox.

Following a good hearty lunch, not to mention some liquid refreshment, 21 Dimmers set off for the afternoon sojourn which included the potential for shopping in Alfriston Village, although surprisingly no one succumbed !

Apart from a misty start, we were blessed with excellent weather and underfoot conditions.

Thank you Jackie and John for organizing todays lovely East Sussex get together.

January 2018 - Bolney

And did those feet in ( ancient ) Dimmers time, walk upon England’s  (mountains) pathways green ???

We had a pretty good turn out for the first of our walks in 2018
.

The sunshine shone for most of our walk and it was dry above ground. It has to be said though that the underfoot conditions were ‘slightly challenging’ but being hardy souls we dealt with it in the only way we do, and just got on with it.

A welcome and hearty lunch was enjoyed at The Eight Bells at Bolney, where we were joined by David and a few other non-walking Dimmers. It was good to see you.

Thank you Monica and Dick for arranging today’s interesting walk, as previously said, it is much appreciated. Thank you also to David who arranged the sunny weather from on high!

July 2018 - Southwater Country Park & Dragons Green

As most of you are aware, todays ‘walking day’ had the forecasters announcing that ‘today we will experience the hottest temperatures so far this year’. Were we going to postpone ? No we were not.

So it was that 15 Dimmers - who also included Dave Whensley, who we very warmly welcome to the group - set off at 10.30 from Southwater Country Park in the very warm sunshine.

Breaking news !

Two more members showed a very keen interest in joining us on the walk, as you will see from this photo taken by the Newnham's. The horses, who were quite frisky, were hoping that one of us had an apple or other treats in our rucksacks. They were to be disappointed.

P.S. This has got to be the best display of hats seen in a long time. And people still want to join us!!!

April 2019 - Washington and the South Downs

Thank you very much to Jan and Dave for our super walk this month. We also were blessed with fine sunny weather, no doubt thanks in part to our patriarch - still playing his part and keeping an eye on us all.

We parked at the Frankland Arms in Washington village for our morning only walk. The route took us along the foot of the Downs, across fields and farmland, before we ascended up onto the South Downs Way. During Photos curtesy of Dave & Jan Newnham:our climb, phewww, we stopped on a few occasions to ‘admire the wonderful view’ and it certainly was a good one !!

At the top, and having got our breath back, we then followed the South Downs Way along the ridge and back down into Washington, where  a drink, a good lunch and a sit down were warmly welcomed.

January 2023 - Small Dole

Ron and Arthur led twelve of us through the foothills of the Downs from The Fox Inn, Small Dole. Some took the low route and wondered if the muddy path through Three Field Woods would ever end………others took the high, passing the mast  and viewing the sea and flooded fields after a not insignificant climb! Peter Hargreaves’ bridge building skills were much appreciated after the high party encountered a wide pond across their path.

A good time (and lunch) was had by all.
